Fifa 94 First Round

^ Mexico's Luis Garcia bursting with energy against Irish opponents Phelan and Keane. Garcia knocked in both goals in Mexico's 2-1 win.

^ Hristo Stoitchkov scored the second goal in Bulgaria's 2-0 win over an Argentina team still in shock over Maradona's failed drug test. Diego Simeone (14) in the background.

^ Fernando Redondo was excellent in every game for Argentina in central midfield. He was one of few Argentina players who managed to reach their normal level even after the Maradona scandal. Here he is in action versus Nigeria.

^ Jürgen Klinsmann in action against Spain. He scored Germany's goal in the 1-1 draw. Personally he had a great World Cup, but many of the veterans in the German team did not live up to the standard required to win a World Cup.

^ Thomas Hässler didn't deliver the sort of play which made him a star during Euro1992. This is from the opening match against Bolivia.

^ Two record-breaking players. At 42, Roger Milla of Cameroon became the oldest ever player and goalscorer when he netted against Russia. Oleg Salenko became the first man to score 5 goals in a World Cup match. However, both teams had failed to collect enough points and had to go home after the first round

^ Rai -- brother of 1982 legend Socrates -- lost his place in the first team line-up early on in the tournament, but was used frequently as a substitute. Here against Cameroon a match in which he started.

^ Martin Dahlin emerged as one of the deadliest strikers in the world during these weeks in America. Here against Cameroon where he scored one of the goals in the 2-2 draw.
