France 98 ( Final ) France VS Brazil 3-0

^ Brazil, the beaten finalists. Back row from left: Taffarel, Cesar Sampaio, Rivaldo, Aldair, Junior Baiano and Cafu. Front row from left: Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Leonardo, Bebeto and Dunga

^ France, the 1998 World Cup winners. Their line-up in the final. Back row from left: Zidane, Desailly, Leboeuf, Thuram, Guivarc'h and Petit. Front row from left: Karembeu, Djorkaeff, Deschamps, Barthez and Lizarazu.

^ Heavily criticized before the World Cup, coach Aime Jacquet now had his time of revenge. Here carried around the field holding the cup aloft.

^ A proud captain Didier Deschamps with Zidane and the trophy on a lap of honour.

^ Emmanuel Petit races clear to score France's third goal in the dying seconds of the match. The largest winning margin in a World Cup final since Brazil themselves outplayed Italy in 1970.

^ None of the creative Brazilian players produced anything in the first half. Leonardo was substituted at half time. Here challenged by Bixente Lizarazu.

^ Zidane with the ball attacked by Roberto Carlos. No Brazilians were able to cope with the elegant Frenchman in the final. It became the most one-sided final in modern times.

^ Zinedine Zidane outjumps Leonardo and heads France in front in the final. Zizou was never regarded as a particularly good player in the air, but having scored two headed goals in the final most people had to reconsider that.

^ Barthez and Ronaldo crashing into eachother in the final. Brazil found no way through the French defensive wall.

^ Rivaldo failed to connect well with Bebeto and Ronaldo in the final. Here challenged by Djorkaeff.

France 98 ( Bronzematch ) Croatia VS Holland 2-1

>> Croatia VS Holland

^ Davor Suker, the topscorer of World Cup 1998, celebrating with the Croatian flag on a lap of honour after the bronzematch where he scored the winning goal.

^ Just like Sweden in 1994, Croatia quite surprisingly ended up with the bronzemedals. Here Boban and Seedorf.

France 98 ( Semifinals )

^ Brazil VS Holland - Patrick Kluivert pops up between the Brazilian centerbacks to head home the Dutch equalizer a minute from time in the semifinal. Extratime and penalties followed with Holland once again ending up on the losing side.

^ Taffarel saves the attempt from Phillip Cocu and Brazil have the advantage in the penalty shoot-out. Taffarel later saved from Ronald de Boer as well and Brazil could book yet another place in the World Cup final.

^ France VS Croatia - Lilian Thuram had never previously scored for France before he scored twice in the semifinal against Croatia. He looks as if he still can't believe it.

^ Zinedine Zidane with perfect control despite Croatia's Mario Stanic attempt of tackling him. Zizou was world class in the latter stages of the tournament.

^ Laurent Blanc was sent off for pushing Slaven Bilic in the penalty area before a corner. The referee read it as a knock in the face which Bilic made it look like when he fell to the ground as if Mike Tyson had slaughtered him.

France 98 ( Qualterfinals )

^ Rivaldo on the ball with full control dancing through the Danish defence.

^ Rivaldo emerged as one of the most entertaining players in the World Cup. He scored the matchwinning goal in this quarterfinal against Denmark with a long range effort.

^ Italy out of the World Cup on penalties for the third time in a row. This time to France. Roberto Baggio was a member of all those teams, but scored in this shoot-out. Demetrio Albertini (on the ground) missed his attempt.

^ Ariel Ortega is sent off for head-butting the Dutch keeper Edwin van der Sar. It was a clumsy and unnecessary action from the little wizard who had played remarkably well throughout the tournament.

^ Jürgen Klinsmann walks off the pitch after losing 3-0 to Croatia in the quarterfinals. At least this time Germany did not have a team with potential to win the World Cup. The defeat to Bulgaria four years earlier must have been more painful. Goalkeeper Andreas Köpke and Jörg Heinrich also know time is up.

France 98 ( Second Round )

^ Overmars trying to get past Petrovic.

^ Gheorge Hagi was one of the stars of the '94 World Cup, but four years later in France, he was only a shadow of his old self. Here battling with Zvonimir Boban.

^ Alessandro Del Piero shielding the ball against Norway's Dan Eggen. The game ended 1-0 to the Italians.

^ Jürgen Klinsmann was still going strong at 34 and delivered a fine World Cup for the ageing German team. Outplayed by Mexico for most of the match, Berti Vogts' men recovered from one goal down to win 2-1. Klinsmann scores the equalizer in the picture.

^ Michael Laudrup was brilliant for Denmark against Nigeria. Okocha and Oliseh are having all sorts of problems dealing with the legendary Dane who ended his career after France 98.

^ Ronaldo is crowded out by the Chilean defence in this South American second round match. Brazil controlled the game early on and won 4-1 with Ronaldo getting two goals in what was arguably his best game of the tournament.

^ Disaster for England. Referee Nielsen sends off David Beckham for his clumsy challenge on Diego Simeone. Gary Neville (12) knows the task of winning is even tougher now.

^ Michael Owen has just scored his famous solo-goal against Argentina and England are 2-1 up already after fifteen minutes. Beckham joins in the celebration.

France 98 ( First Round )

^ Gabriel Batistuta celebrating one of his three goals against Jamaica. Batigol became the first man in World Cup history to score a hat-trick in multiple tournaments.

^ Argentina's Ariel Ortega celebrating one of his two goals against Jamaica.

^ David Beckham curls in this free-kick against Colombia. It was his first international goal and England virtually secured a place in the second round.

^ Carlos Valderrama couldn't sparkle Colombia enough to go through, but he did win the "Best Hair" award as always.

^ Predrag Mijatovic and Lothar Matthäus battle for possession in this first round 2-2 draw. Matthäus came on to break a new record for most appearances in WC history. This was his 22nd which took him past Maradona, Zmuda and Seeler. He eventually stopped at 25.

^ Andreas Möller scores an early goal against the United States. Germany went on to win 2-0.

^ South Korea was sent home from the World Cup yet again without a win. Dennis Bergkamp and Holland put five balls in the Korean net.

^ Thierry Henry was a new face for most people when he showed up at the World Cup. He knocked in three goals, one of them this neat chip against South Africa.

^Christian Vieri celebrating one of his two goals against Cameroon in the 3-0 win. Vieri's appetite for goals made the whole of Italy dream about a fourth World Cup triumph.

^ Marcelo Salas rises high to head home the 1-1 equalizer for Chile against Italy. Fabio Cannavaro is beaten in the air in this match which ended 2-2 with Salas also scoring his country's second goal.

^ Ronaldo scored his first World Cup goal against Morocco and set up another one in this 3-0 win.

^ Much was expected from Ronaldo when he entered the field on the opening day of the tournament to face Scotland. He caused all sorts of problems with his powerful style, here keeping Boyd and Collins busy

^ Scotland gave everything they had against Brazil. Burley and Collins here closing down Roberto Carlos in this opening match of the 16th World Cup
